Do
you want to learn
Morse code? Here is your chance. We are starting a special introduction to Morse code at our next OARS meeting, 7:30 PM Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 In the basement of the Aurora MO Library The class is structured as a beginner-level course for those who do not know the Morse alphabet. Later we may pick up those who have previously studied CW who now want to improve their speed and understanding of Morse code. We want to start out this new group with methods to avoid problems that often occur in learning the code by yourself. We will particularly avoid use of a written or printed list of the alphabet and the Morse character it represents. The code should be learned by simply hearing the character, sent at a fairly high speed, and instantly writing that character down without thinking. It is in "translating" the code, by means such as counting the "dits" that causes barriers to develop. These limit the student from working anything other than slow speeds, and then not feeling comfortable with it. There are other "do's" and "don'ts" that will be covered. The course is designed to last about two months. Those joining the class must agree to spend a minimum of 15 minutes each day on the code. If that time is not available they should wait for a later class and not slow down the others in this first class. It will also be necessary for students to have access to a device capable of playing audio discs such as a CD player. We will soon be having a CW net on two meters as the training progresses. This will be a slow code session for those learning the code for the first time. The time, date and frequency will be announced on the 146.970 repeater and/or the OARS meeting. So dust off your key and the 2m rig and join in the fun. If you have questions, contact Doug NØWAN at dhs@sofnet.com73, Doug |
